The Lead Story: Abu Dhabi Pays the Visa Cost to Win More Indian Travellers

Abu Dhabi is covering UAE entry visa costs for eligible Indian passport holders booking qualifying holidays through participating travel partners and OTAs between August 1 and October 31, 2026. The programme covers up to 20,000 visas and requires at least three consecutive hotel nights plus a return flight from India. DCT Abu Dhabi will reimburse eligible visa costs at AED 285 per traveller.

India was already Abu Dhabi’s largest hotel source market in 2025, with 436,124 guests, up 22%. The programme now links that demand directly to longer stays and packaged bookings. By tying the visa subsidy to three hotel nights and partner distribution, Abu Dhabi is using destination marketing closer to the point of purchase. Instead of a broad consumer incentive, the visa becomes a conversion tool that reduces booking friction while directing demand toward measurable room nights.

The Briefing:

  • IHG Global RevPAR Rises 4.1%:
IHG reported 4.1% global RevPAR growth in the first half of 2026, supported by a 3.3% increase in rate and a one-percentage-point gain in occupancy, despite the West Asia crisis. The numbers show hotel room revenues continuing to expand at scale even as growth varies across markets, keeping pricing and occupancy performance positive rather than relying on one lever alone.

  • Lemon Tree Looks to Follow Indian Travellers Abroad:
Lemon Tree Hotels is targeting the UAE, Thailand and the Maldives as it expands internationally. The strategy gives the company a way to test whether domestic brand recognition and its 2.5-million-member loyalty base can travel with its customers as Lemon Tree shifts toward a more asset-light operating model.

  • PickMe Turns UPI Acceptance Into a Tourist Discount:
Indian travellers in Sri Lanka can now receive 20% off PickMe rides, capped at LKR 750 per transaction, when paying through UPI. The partnership moves cross-border UPI beyond basic payment acceptance and into customer acquisition: digital payments become part of the travel offer itself, giving tourists an immediate reason to use UPI for everyday destination spending.

Booking Holdings Is Building One B2B Business Across Three OTAs

What happened: Booking Holdings is consolidating the B2B operations of Agoda, Booking.com and Priceline into a single Booking Partner Division. Agoda CEO Omri Morgenshtern will lead the new unit while continuing to run Agoda, with Agoda chief product officer Ittai Chorev becoming COO. The division will be built primarily around Agoda’s B2B technology, supplemented by selected Booking.com capabilities, and is expected to become a formal legal entity in January 2027.

Why it matters: Booking Holdings has historically given its major brands considerable independence. A common B2B technology and commercial layer changes that model where partner distribution is concerned. Rather than maintaining parallel B2B operations, the group can combine inventory, connectivity and partner relationships behind a more unified proposition for companies embedding travel into their own products. The competitive pressure is already substantial: Expedia’s B2B business generated $10.7 billion in gross bookings in Q2, up 21% year-on-year. Booking’s consolidation gives it a more direct route to compete for white-label and embedded-travel demand while raising the technology and inventory benchmark for smaller B2B intermediaries.

Visual- Stat of the Day:

Takeaway: A few minutes of totality are creating a full travel pricing event. Reykjavík hotel rates have jumped more than 140% to over $1,000 a night, Airbnb prices in Iceland’s eclipse path are up 53.7%, and parts of northern Spain are seeing hotel increases from roughly 31% to more than 100%. Spain is also expecting about €342 million in eclipse-related tourist spending. The pattern is clear: rare, date-specific events can compress demand across hotels, rentals, flights and cruises at the same time, turning a short astronomical moment into a high-yield travel window.

India Expands e-Visa Entry Beyond the Usual Gateways

Case: India has added 11 international entry points for eligible foreign travellers holding e-Visas, taking the total network to 88. The additions comprise nine land ports and two airports, with Bhopal and Tirupati now able to process arriving e-Visa holders. The expansion broadens the physical network through which foreign visitors can enter India instead of concentrating e-Visa access only around the country’s established international gateways.

Where it helps: More entry points give inbound itineraries greater flexibility, particularly where a traveller’s actual destination sits far from the largest international airports or where an itinerary crosses a land border. Bhopal and Tirupati also put e-Visa processing directly into two regional destinations rather than requiring every eligible visitor to first clear immigration elsewhere. Over time, wider entry access can make regional, pilgrimage and multi-destination itineraries easier to build around the traveller’s intended route instead of the visa system’s available gateways.

Risk: Immigration eligibility does not create connectivity on its own. Adding an airport or land port to the e-Visa network removes one administrative constraint, but the commercial impact still depends on international air services, cross-border transport, operating capacity and clear traveller communication. An entry point becomes materially useful to tourism only when travellers can reach it conveniently and the surrounding destination can absorb the resulting demand.
